"There are things that we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn, and people we can’t live without but have to let go."

It’s a much warmer morning with a clearish sky and no wind. It is amazing how each day is different at the moment and I think that is the way it will continue for the next month. We are doing normal canters today and progressing how we would like, cantering on an assortment of polytracks on racecourse side. We will even get on the grass later on with some of the two-year-olds.

In theory the new Cheltenham Festival rule that has just been brought in - that horses can’t run twice at the Festival - looks sensible enough, but several trainers think that circumstances are what should dictate whether they be allowed to run more than once or not. This rule takes away the option anybody would have and there are pluses and minuses to the instruction. However, I am not sure how many trainers were asked their opinion before this rule came into force, but I do think that the soundness and vetting of all horses has always been a good idea. The racecourse is also very keen on who can go in and out of the stables at this meeting, as in the past it has been a little chaotic, especially when all the Irish horses arrive. Once again common sense should prevail.

I see the Australian trainer has been banned for four years for possessing three electric jiggers. As I said yesterday he should get a life ban as cruelty to any animal, in my view, is a criminal offence. I think the police might be investigating this matter further but let’s hope it’s the last we ever hear of these ridiculous and inhuman instruments. The vast majority of people in our sport love horses and would do anything for them, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but you always get an idiot of two who is ruled by greed, spoiling it and giving the sport a bad reputation because of their ignorance.
