Cantering on Southfields Round

It’s bright but very cold and we have had a good ground frost. The forecast is for a few showers later on in the week but to continue in this cold vein. Everybody is in once again and working well. The horses have been cantering on Southfields Round for most of the morning and the yearlings have been going on the new yearling ground which the Jockey Club have let us use at the top of Hamilton Hill. It certainly is a good addition and very handy for Frankland Lodge.

It was very good racing this last weekend with the highlight for me being Winx winning her fourth Cox Plate. She is a wonder mare and has grabbed the Australian public’s hearts. The enthusiasm in that country for our sport is amazing to see and the front pages will now be full of speculation for the next week on who will win the Melbourne Cup. If only we could have that sort of enthusiasm here it would be tremendous for the game.

It was very sad to hear of the death of the Leicester City chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and our condolences go to the families of everybody involved in this tragic incident. This brings into focus what could happen if one of our other major owners withdrew their support or similar. He had been a major investor in the yearling and horses in training market and whether the rest of the family will continue this is anybody’s guess, but the BHA must think about what would happen if we suddenly lost a couple of thousand horses from the system. The encouragement of new and existing owners to continue has to be number one priority on their agenda as without owners there is no sport.
