A perfect morning in Newmarket

It is a breezy, beautiful day here and it looks set fair for the next few days. It is just a normal cantering morning with plenty of people in once again. The horses are having a good pick of grass afterwards in the sunshine.

The big news this morning is that the government has dramatically reduced the amount per spin on the fixed odds betting terminals in the betting shops - that's fruit machines to you and me. There has been so much talk on both sides for the last year or so. The bookmakers have said it will cause thousands of shops to shut, which would be a big loss to our industry. In my opinion, not that I am privy to the bookmakers inside information, I don't think it will be as drastic as they have made out. With the Tote situation about to explode in the next few months our finaces will be interesting to say the least

I read with interest and  wonderment that the Spelthorne Borough Council local planning document says that Kempton Park Racecourse is one of their largest visitor attractions. Well, none of their members can possibly have gone to Kempton Park other than on one day of the year i.e. Boxing Day, as every other day it is completely empty with only the owners and trainers and a few bookmakers attending.
