It was a wet start to the morning, with drizzle dampening down the dust, but as we write this, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. The temperature is a lot cooler than yesterday though and the next few days are forecast to be overcast with sunny intervals and light rain at the weekend. We have been schooling today with a couple of horses and all has gone well. The remainder have been on the polytracks close to home.

I’m not sure what the crisis at the BHA is all about, but it looks like the chairman is coming under huge pressure from other members of the board. As usual in these matters the ordinary person will be kept in the dark until the fighting is over. It looks to me as if it is all to do with the two different Tote systems which will be in opposition this summer. With finances the main driver of our industry we must be a unified force, all moving in the same direction, with the same aim, rather than be fighting against one another. It will be interesting to see how it all develops.

For those of you who got to see the first days racing at Chester I don’t think we saw too many surprises. As mentioned yesterday, the draw plays a very big part and all the winners came from the middle of the track or lower. The Cheshire Oaks was won for the sixth time by Aidan O’Brien but have we seen an Epsom horse? Today is ladies day which is always a spectacle to see, it also brings in a huge crowd. Chester really knows how to look after their visitors, which is why people return year after year.
