The weather has changed once again and it is a few degrees cooler this morning. It is either that, or I am so tired that I am feeling the cold more, but I think it is the former. The forecast is for it to pour with rain this weekend. We have had a very busy morning with horses going in and out at frequent intervals. Barry, my assistant, must already have ridden at least seven and will be going racing this evening. Team work is what is required and organisation is a must.

We have three runners tonight all at Chelmsford and I turn out two of them quite quickly. Our first is Bracken Brae in the 7.45. It was a slowly run race three days ago, but she has eaten everything up since, so I can’t see any reason not to go again. This is a better race, but it is over a bit further and I am sure she will be competitive. Hold Firm is our other runner quickly turned out in the 8.45. He has won his last two and must have a chance of making it three tonight. He has been ultra-consistent and is sure to be involved. Our third runner, in the 9.15, is Gee Sixty Six who is a brother to Bracken Brae. His two runs have not been without promise. He is a bit awkward at the stalls, but has had some practice since his last run and, although ideally he will need a bit further in time, should run reasonably well once again.

Colt by Garswood ex Mega

We had our seventh foal of the year in the early hours of this morning, when Mega produced a big colt foal by Garswood. Both mother and son are doing well. This will be her last foal as she is now getting on a bit, but she has been a very good broodmare, producing plenty of winners. I really love her two-year-old colt we have this year, Saint Anthony, who is one of our Raceworld syndicate horses. There are shares still for sale in him at a very reasonable price.

The Cheltenham Festival, as usual, has turned up plenty of surprises and excitement. But, the one thing I would like to point out is that the 17 year old jockey, Jack Kennedy, who rode the first winner at this year’s meeting, had started off in pony racing when he was nine. Now pony racing in Ireland is completely different to the pony racing we have here in England. In Ireland they go around any old field, flat out, with betting, and the rough and tumble is unbelievable. The jockeys very quickly grow up, unlike the racing we have here, on a racecourse, in straight lines and a bit elitist. My point here is that the conveyor belt of jockeys, like him, will continue from Ireland, but I very much doubt it will happen in England.
